I have been working in the film and television industry for over 30 years, mainly as a lighting technician and a Director of Photography. As a DP, it's been my pleasure to work with luminaries like Christy Turlington, Tina Turner, Whitney Huston, Billy Joel, KD Lang, Chris Whitley and many others.
Recently, I reactivated in IATSE Local 600 and reclassified as a still photographer. I believe my on-set experience makes me well qualified to negotiate the delicate work of getting the best shots as quickly and unobtrusively as possible and enlist the support of other departments when necessary. Knowing how to light and how to take advantage of natural features of location environments also helps to get great shots in a time crunch. I like to keep an eye out for those unexpected moments that can often enhance the look or visual subtext and lend more meaning to the images.
Much of my personal photography has been subject driven and I try to adopt an appropriate style that has dramatic and emotional impact. In television and features, it's important to make a mug shot look authentic or a family picture from the seventies to look like your own pictures from that era. Other times it may be more appropriate to mimic the look of the show in terms of color saturation, contrast and quality of light.
My work in film and photography has made me familiar with studio work, regional locations as well as more exotic locales as far off as Albania, Morocco and India. I try always to be prepared and alert to new opportunities, if there is one thing that filmmaking has taught me, it's to plan well and be prepared to improvise when something isn't working.
